WAYNESBORO — A fire at a three-story manufacturing facility in Waynesboro was very visible Wednesday afternoon.

The Waynesboro Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial structure fire just before 3:30 p.m. at Berry Plastics, which is located at 1020 Shenandoah Village Dr. Those who arrived at the scene reported smoke coming from the facility.

With the help from workers at Berry Plastics, the fire was found in the ductwork on the third floor of the structure, the report said. Soon after that, the fire was extinguished.

There was minimal damage to the building, since the fire department arrived so quickly, the release said. The fire department credits their proximity to Berry Plastics in a temporary location on the west end of the city itheir prompt arrival, the release said. They also credit the facility's management for ensuring that fire suppression systems and fire alarms were in working order and regularly inspected, the release said.

The facility has moderate fire and water damage with minor smoke damage, the release said. The overall loss to the structure and contents is still undetermined, the fire department said.

A contracting company had been working within the facility and sparks may have been drawn up into the ductwork, which contain plastic products, the release said. The fire has been deemed accidental due to that.

The City of Waynesboro Fire Department was assisted by members from Dooms Volunteer Fire Department, Augusta County Fire and Rescue, Wilson Volunteer Fire Company, as well as Wintergreen Fire and Rescue, Waynesboro First Aid Crew and the Waynesboro Police Department.

Berry Plastics is based out of Evansville Indiana and has grown into a global, publicly traded, multi-billion dollar public corporation. It was renamed Berry Global in 2017.

The company is a leading provider of laminate and extruded tubes to the beauty, personal care, healthcare, home care, automotive and food industries, its website said. Berry offers tubes in a variety of sizes and colors with a broad selection of decorating processes include Soft Touch, hot stamping, cold foil, silk screen, flexographic printing, and registered embossing/debossing with both matte or glossy finishes, the site said. Berry manufacturers the sheet, forms and decorates the tube and produces the closures.
